Eternal Security Part 2
Arguments for:
Joh
10:28
“And I give them everlasting life, and they shall by no means ever
perish, and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
Joh
10:29
“My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. And no
one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
At
first glance this may seem to indicate an argument for Eternal
security. The problem is the rest of the context.
Joh
10:27
“My
sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.1
Footnote:
1Rev.
14:4-5.
Only
those who hear and follow the shepherd are called His sheep. His
sheep are the only ones who have eternal life. In the original Greek
the words Hear
and Follow
are
in the present tense. This means that His sheep are those that are
actively hearing and following. This cannot be someone who at
another time heard and followed and is not currently doing so. The
security is conditional. What does it mean to hear and to follow?
The Greek to hear comes from a word meaning to comprehend or
understand. In this context the word follow, in the Greek means one
who cleaves or holds firmly with all of his might with out letting
go. So they must be cleaving to the Shepherd in believing trust and
obedience. Those who hold to Him must also follow His lead and act
according to His example. You cannot be following if you are not
obeying.
Rom
11:17
And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild
olive tree, have been grafted in among them, and came to share the
root and fatness of the olive tree,
Rom
11:18
do not boast against the branches. And if you boast, remember:
you do not bear the root, but the root bears
you!
Rom
11:19
You shall say then, “The branches were broken off that I might be
grafted in.”
Rom
11:20
Good! By unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by belief. Do
not be arrogant, but fear.
Rom
11:21
For if Elohim did not spare the natural branches, He might not spare
you either.
Rom
11:22
See then the kindness and sharpness of Elohim: on those who fell
sharpness, but toward you kindness, if you continue in His
kindness, otherwise you also shall be cut off.
As
a believer we are grafted into the good olive tree. But if we choose
to not continue in His goodness we can be cut off.
Rom
8:35
Who shall separate us from the love of the Messiah? Shall pressure,
or distress, or persecution, or scarcity of food, or nakedness, or
danger, or sword?
Rom
8:36
As it has been written, “For Your sake we are killed all day long,
we are reckoned as sheep of slaughter.”
Rom
8:37
But in all this we are more than overcomers through Him who loved
us.
Rom
8:38
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor messengers nor
principalities nor powers, neither the present nor the future,
Rom
8:39
nor height nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to
separate us from the love of Elohim which is in Messiah יהושע
our
Master.
What
about these verses. These verses are not talking about salvation but
about the love of Elohim. Love and salvation are two different gifts
from Elohim.
I
believe this final passage sums up the whole issue. Eph
4:17
So this I say, and witness in the Master, that you
should no longer walk as the gentiles walk,1
in the futility of their mind, Footnote:
11
Cor. 12:2, and Jer. 10:2.
Eph
4:18
having been darkened in their understanding, having been estranged
from the life of Elohim, because of the ignorance that is in them,
because of the hardness of their heart,
Eph
4:19
who, having become callous, have given themselves up to indecency,
to work all uncleanness with greediness.
Eph
4:20
But you have not so learned Messiah,
Eph
4:21
if indeed you have heard Him and were taught by Him, as truth is in
יהושע:
Eph
4:22
that you put off –
with regard to your former way of life – the old man, being
corrupted according to the desires of the deceit,
Eph
4:23
and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
Eph
4:24
and that you put on the renewed
man1
which was created according to Elohim, in righteousness and
set-apartness of the truth. Footnote:
1Rom.
8:1.
Eph
4:25
Therefore, having put off the false, speak truth, each one with his
neighbour, for we are members of one another.
Eph
4:26
“Be wroth, but do not sin.” Do not let the sun go down on your
rage,
Eph
4:27
nor give place to the devil.
Eph
4:28
Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labour, working
with his hands what is good, so that he has somewhat
to share with those in need.
Eph
4:29
Let no corrupt word come out of your mouth, but only such as is good
for the use of building up, so as to impart what is pleasant to the
hearers.
Eph
4:30
And do not grieve the Set-apart Spirit of Elohim, by whom you were
sealed for the day of redemption.
Eph
4:31
Let all bitterness, and wrath, and displeasure, and uproar, and
slander be put away from you, along with all evil.
Eph
4:32
And be kind towards one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one
another, as Elohim also forgave you in Messiah.
Eph
5:1
Become, then, imitators of Elohim as beloved children.
Eph
5:2
And walk in love, as Messiah also has loved us, and gave Himself for
us, a gift and an offering to Elohim for a sweet-smelling fragrance.
Eph
5:3
But whoring and all uncleanness, or greed of gain, let it not even
be named among you, as is proper among set-apart ones –
Eph
5:4
neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which
are not fitting, but rather thanksgiving.
Eph
5:5
For this you know, that no one who whores, nor unclean one, nor one
greedy of gain, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the reign
of Messiah and Elohim.
Eph
5:6
Let
no one deceive you with empty words,1
for because of these the wrath of Elohim comes upon the sons of
disobedience. Footnote:
1See
4:14.
Eph
5:7
Therefore do not become partakers with them.
Eph
5:8
For
you were once darkness,1
but now you
are
light in the Master. Walk as children of light – Footnote:
1See
2:2, 4:18, Col. 3:7.
Eph
5:9
for
the fruit of the Spirit1
is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth – Footnote:
1See
Philip 1:11.
Eph
5:10
proving what is well-pleasing to the Master.
Eph
5:11
And have no fellowship with the fruitless works of darkness, but
rather reprove1
them. Footnote:
1Or
confute,
or expose.
Eph
5:12
For it is a shame even to speak of what is done by them in secret.
Eph
5:13
But all matters
being reproved1
are manifested by the light, for whatever is manifested is light.
Footnote:
1Or
confuted,
or exposed.
Eph
5:14
That is why He says, “Wake up, you who sleep, and arise from the
dead, and Messiah shall shine on you.”
Eph
5:15
See then that you walk exactly, not as unwise, but as wise,
Eph
5:16
redeeming the time, because the days are wicked.
Eph
5:17
So then do not be foolish, but understand what the desire of יהוה
is.
Eph
5:18
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is loose behaviour, but be
filled with the Spirit,
Eph
5:19
speaking to each other in psalms and songs of praise and spiritual
songs, singing and striking the strings in your heart to the Master,
Eph
5:20
giving thanks always for all to Elohim the Father, in the Name of
our Master יהושע
Messiah,
Eph
5:21
subjecting
yourselves to each other in the fear1
of Elohim. Footnote:
1Ex.
20:20.
There
are many who do not handle the Word of Truth wisely. They pick and
choose verses here and there and use them to make them say things
Elohim's word does not. Please when you research use the whole
context and then the greater context of the whole Word of Elohim.
If
the doctrine of Unconditional Eternal Security is true then why do
the New Testament writers spend so much time telling us to avoid sin,
be obedient to Elohim, live a life that is set apart or holy, and so
on. All they would have needed to do was to tell us believe Yeshua
died for your sins, be born again, and after that you can do what you
would like to because you are guaranteed a spot in heaven.
Until
next time. Continue to Study to show yourselves approved. I am
planning on writing a post about signs or messages we want to send to
those around us.
